Heavy Metals in Lake Nakuru X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy
ثبت نشده
چکیده
The purpose of this unit is to introduce the fundamental principles of x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), apply this method to the analysis of simulated data for heavy metals in suspended particulate and sediment samples from Lake Nakuru and critically contrast XRF with alternative methods for determination of heavy metal concentrations. The content is appropriate for students in a course in analytical chemistry or instrumental analysis. This introduction will be achieved via an inquiry-based learning style.

Heavy Metal Analysis by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry
Let’s say that you wanted to determine the heavy metal identities and concentrations in sediment and suspended solid samples obtained from present day Lake Nakuru. What technique would you use for this determination? You could use Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) as was done in the article (Nelson 1998), but another technique, which is particularly good at detecting metals at the ppb level ...
متن کاملThe distribution of Cu and Pb levels in soils and Acacia xanthophloea Benth. from Lake Nakuru National Park Kenya.
Environmental pollution with toxic metals continues to be a serious global concern. Pollution of soils with toxic trace metals have increased considerably since the onset of industrialization and urbanization (Nriagu, 1990; Senwo and Tazisong, 2004). Trace metals, either derived from natural inputs or anthropogenic emissions, are ubiquitous in the global environment (Blackmore, 1998; Muohi et a...
متن کاملExtraction of Some Divalent Metal Ions (Cadmium, Nickel and Lead) from Different Tea and Rice Samples Using Ghezeljeh Nanoclay (Geleh-Sar-Shoor) as a New Natural Sorbent
This article presents the method of extraction-preconcentration of Lead, Cadmium, and Nickel ions from food samples using the Ghezeljeh montmorillonite nanoclay (Geleh-Sar-Shoor) as a new native adsorbent in batch single component systems. The extraction-preconcentration of heavy metals were carried out by applying the solid phase extraction (SPE) method followed by atomic abs...
متن کاملAssessing heavy metal toxicity in sediments of Chennai Coast of Tamil Nadu using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (EDXRF) with statistical approach
The concentration of some heavy metals: Al, Ca, K, Fe, Ti, Mg, Mn, V, Cr, Zn, Ni and Co in sediments from Pulicat Lake to Vadanemmeli along Chennai Coast, Tamil Nadu has been determined using EDXRF technique. The mean concentrations of Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ti, Fe, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Zn were found to be 1918, 25436, 9832, 9859, 2109, 8209, 41.58, 34.14, 160.80, 2.85. 18.79 and 29.12 mg kg-1 respec...
متن کاملApplication of portable XRF and VNIR sensors for rapid assessment of soil heavy metal pollution
Rapid heavy metal soil surveys at large scale with high sampling density could not be conducted with traditional laboratory physical and chemical analyses because of the high cost, low efficiency and heavy workload involved. This study explored a rapid approach to assess heavy metals contamination in 301 farmland soils from Fuyang in Zhejiang Province, in the southern Yangtze River Delta, China...
